Preparing Yourself to Perform Monologue

If you need to choose one from several monologues created by famous playwright whether Shakespeare, David Mamet, Neil Simon, or others to perform your monologue, it is not easy to do this well without the right manner. The essential to success in your monologue is not depend on who is the playwright of monologue you have chose, but it is upon your knowledge and skills which will help you to create your acting in the right ways. Think of that the monologue you choose to perform may be ones that were likely performed by many actors before you, at the same time it could be performed by others actors after you. Of course, there is the different acting in the same speech that why I told you that the great monologue does not upon the author, but it upon ability of the actors. So, to create great monologue, you need to spend your much more talent, style and attitude.

Here are some basic things to pay attention on in preparing to perform your monologues.

Background of the Monologue

While the overall play has lots of details and events that impact the monologue, a monologue is a short scene or speech taken from a larger play. So, it is vital to read the entire play from start to finish as this will make you know why the monologue is taking place in the first place, what happened prior to the monologue taking place and what comes next. It is needed to know the previous behavior of the characters involved and how they react to stimuli. You can not know all about these if you just only read the speech you choose to perform your monologue and then your monologue will go without purpose, feeling and genuine human interaction.

Background of the Character

It is also important to know background of the character you choose to play in a monologue. You can learn about the thought of that character, the feeling and emotion of him/ her by reading entire story. Also reading full play will let you know how he or she will react when confronted with the issues in the monologue.

Objective

Before performing a monologue, the actors must know their objective. The reason because you need to know what the character hopes to achieve in the scene and this help you to determine the emotions used, the tone of the presentation, the volume of the voice, and the overall approach to your monologue.

For example, if the objective of your character in the monologue is to explain to his wife on her unfaithful, you might be know that you must use a sad and somber tone that come with sad eyes, not glowing eyes.
