Typically, most printers have two ink cartridges inside: black cartridges and color cartridges. This system work well, but to hold the cartridges the printer must come in a large size that were huge in comparison to what are used today.
As HP has continued to manufacture this type of printer, they have been traditionally best suited for heavy printing or special applications. Normally, individual ink cartridges can not be found as an option in personal inkjet printers. Until 2001, Epson came out with the C80, while Canon came out with printers like the BJC- 3000 series. And this make separate color ink cartridge system become a real innovation for small offices and home use. Footprint of those printers were equivalent to other contemporary 2-cartridge printers (one black cartridge and one color cartridge), but have the advantages of the older large printers that used separate color cartridges to work.
