Oral Reading Skills Improving

When it come to learning any languages, there are many skills will need to learn and develop, from reading skill, writing skill, and speaking skill, otherwise ones can not be determined that he/she use that language as well. And in order to use language good, there are many ways to acquire depend on what is skill you want to go through first. For example, if you aim to learn speaking first, you may require pronunciation learning and practice at the first period of your learning, but if you prefer writing more, it is important to know about grammar, fully sentence writing and other subjects as many times we can speak short while completed phrases is needed in writing.

When compare those who get English learning by regular way and ESL students, there are some different things can be noticed. An interesting thing can be noticed is about some of ESL students, they can speak clearly enough until they start to read. Then the music is all wrong. So, how they can do about this? The answer may be surprising for you.

Most ESL students have studied how to make the different sounds of English. Many of them have trouble with r and l, and also with th. But the technique I want to tell you about has nothing to do with those sounds.

When we stress a word, it mean that word is important. To impress the importance of that word, we also saying it a little louder, making our voices a little higher, and/or saying the word a little more slowly. This mean, the next time you should listen carefully for the stressed words you hear a native speaker as she/he is telling you that these words are important.

I believe that you know what the pause button is for on your DVD player. English Native speakers use their “pause button” a lot, so listen for the tiny pauses next time you hear a native speaker. Know that people will understand your English much more easily if you can learn to read with correct stress and pauses.

And because the grammar of a sentence helps us figure out where the stress and pauses are, it will help if you have studied English grammar. Nouns and action verbs are stressed. Below is example;

She found the dog under the sofa.

After each stressed word, there is a little pause.

She FOUND the DOG under the SOFA.

We also pause after a clause. Here’s an example:

She was LOOKING for it, but she COULDN’T FIND it.

These are four steps to practice stress and pauses.

  1. Listen to a tape or DVD for which you have the words.
  2. Mark the stressed words and the pauses for the sentence.
  3. Practicing by reading with the tape or DVD.
  4. Try to notice his/her stressed words and pauses when you are listening to a native speaker.

Doing this on regular basis, then you will find that people understand you much better than ever.
