The Cause of Vocal Hoarseness – Part I
I believe that most people never have to known that there is a correlation between physical fitness and vocal health. Vocal sound begins with a complex and dynamic interaction of various muscles in the vocal tract. Due to this fact, increasing cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and coordination are the good exercise programs we should to try on, especially if you are the public speaker who will usually need to speak in front of a lot of people on regular basis. During speaking and singing, these benefits, especially endurance and flexibility contribute to more efficient use of energy by reducing tension and increasing airflow for breathing. However, if you do not take care of other factors that can create vocal problems, you still might be experiencing hoarseness.
There are a variety of reasons can raise vocal hoarseness problem. These are several causes with explanations of vocal abuse that may lead to hoarseness or vocal fatigue.
- Excessive speaking during an upper respiratory infection. When you are talking with coughing and throat clearing, it is highly likely that you are experiencing a cold. While coughing a cold, there is excessive mucous drainage which adds to the irritation of the vocal cords and this makes you have vocal hoarseness. When you got a cold, it is time to take rest, not to speak.
- Coughing/Throat clearing. While you cough or clear your throat, you are also slamming your vocal cords very hard. Know that doing like this many times can create swollen cords and then your vocal sound will be different from normal. There is a method for coughing and throat clearing that is not hard on the cords. This is effective way for those who clear their throats or cough out of habit.
- Smoking cigarettes. Smoking is one obviously cause of vocal hoarseness as the smoke will passes through the vocal cords on their way to your lungs extremely drying to the entire vocal tract.
- Speaking in smoky environments. Second hand smoke has been shown to attack people almost as much as taking puffs themselves. Therefore, although you do not smoke, it is always worth to drink plenty of water if you have to speak or sing in smoky environments.
- Drinking alcohol. As alcohol is dehydrating and will rob you of your fluids, why you like to drink it? Drinking alcohol not only hurt your healthy and cause ailment, it also ruin your voice too.
- Not drinking enough water. Water is an essential part of our body. Human can not live without taking water inside. Most experts recommend 8-10 glasses to stay well hydrated and keep your vocal performance edge.
- Inadequate breath support. Similarly, it is very important that you need to have enough breath support. When it comes to voice projection and maintaining good vocal health, good breath support is essential. Do not have shallow breathing and use diaphragmatic support so that you will have resonant voice.
